What people really mean when they say “probably.”

Executive Summary

This 10-minute excerpt is a great example of how Leaders show up in conversations. It’s a classic 1:1 meeting between a Leader and someone on their team.

Here are some findings:

  • More often than not, I see leaders interrupting conversations. This is a good data point to observe in the self and one that I do highlight to leaders. What to do? PAUSE. Allow the other person to completely finish expressing what they need.
  • Create powerful open-ended questions such as WHAT and HOW to allow the other person to access their own resources. TIP ✏️: This is how you delegate!
  • Acknowledgements are one of the easiest things to do. You don’t even need to understand or know the whole context. Simply acknowledge genuinely. I’ve heard you. I hear you.

What people really mean when they say probably

This conversation was a fun one to analyze. It’s very simple and yet carries a lot of opportunities to create trust and safety with the team.

A leader creates trust and safety (even in conversations)

There are so many subtle and nuances ways we show up in conversations. And without seeing ourselves, we can’t see how we show up. This is why I do conversation analysis with Leaders. It’s allowing you to see how you show up – in conversation. Words have power. They carry a certain energy and understanding. And this goes both ways.
