There are 2 parts to optimizing your role as a Leader with a coaching mindset (The Leader, as a Coach):
A self-awareness for how you show up as a Leader (right now):
- What are the lens you wear? Biases? Assumptions? Deductions? We make these unconsciously as human beings. By understanding these lenses, we can circuit break our thinking and consciously have choice in how we show up. There’s a psychological phenomenon known as “Projection Bias” which I explore in this data research project I did around the % of likelihood of probably. It is a good place for you to start seeing how you project your own understanding on to others, it’s the same for why we have biases and assumptions.
- What is the mindset you have going into a conversation? Some Leaders look for solutions only, but what if the other person (or people) aren’t looking for the same? This is what I mean by mindset. We operate with a certain mindset in which we feel this is how we deliver value. Solutioning is the most common way that most Leaders show up. This is how we are trained in school and in the workplace, but there are other mindsets available. The point is to not eliminate a certain mindset, but to encapsulate all of them in the right moment.
A master of creating powerful conversations:
- Being a Leader with the mindset of a coach is a very powerful combination. You can create a different type of conversation with the people you work with. What is possible?
- Create reflective and deeper thinking moments where the other person is able to see their own values, limiting beliefs, and understanding.
- Empower the other person to tap into their own resources and wisdom. Rather than TELL your teams what to do, you create a conversation where they FIGURE IT OUT THEMSELVES!
- Anchor self-initiated action, accountability and responsibility. Through a series of questions, learn to create this thread of action to accountability. The actions come from themselves and that allows for accountability and prompting them to step into making it happen!
